new member; lack of power
hi all, been registered for a while, but i got rid of my last jeep and now am back in another. i can't quit the jeeps i guess. anyways, my 87 4.0 5spd just seems really slow to me. i can't climb off-road without putting it in 4lo and crawling. this is my first 5speed so please tell me that's not why. it also will die a lot when i first try to take off and sometimes on corners/bumps. i've been so frustrated i've thought to get rid of it but i would really like to fix it and start playing too!!
thanks for any help! hope to maybe meet some of you in my area? roseburg, or

Try fuel system cleaner, new plugs, wires, everything.
I put new plugs in mine, and it made all the difference in the world.
Not to mention the old plugs were gapped about .025 inches off. haha

hey thanks for the pics fix there. i'll try to get some better ones to show off my custom bumper. about the problem, i've done most the usual tune up stuff already, also replaced fuel filter, tried running heet and fuel injector cleaner and octane boost. tried running premium too. one person has suggested fuel pressure and another distributer problems, could this be a timing issue? i haven't had any backfires. is there a way to check fuel pressure? it currently has 202k miles

could the power lack i'm feeling be from having auto trannys before and now having a manual? i know there is a different gearing there but i have no real understanding of how they relate to each other? with the 5 speed and 31s should i try to switch the gearing? how hard/costly is that? i do have pretty much no 5th gear power, useful for going down hills only....

maybe for the gearing you could get some axles from an auto cherokee in a junkyard with 3.55 gears. yours probably has 3.07
