New jeep owner with fuel problem and codes

Hi, 1st post 1st jeep. I picked up a new toy to play with today that sort of runs hoping some one might be able to help with where to start with current problem.I picked it up for $500 its a 1998 Jeep laredo wont start unless I use starter fluid or dump some fuel intake but once started it runs great but wont re start untill I do the same thing again. Previous owner has thrown $$ at it with parts before giving up and selling it to me. I get code PO 443 and code p1282. Where would you start and or whats your thoughts thanks

The P1282 is a short in the fuel pump relay circuit. The P0443 is a short in the evap purge solenoid circuit.

The fuel pump relay is located in the power distribution center under the hood(the black box with fuses and relays). You may have a sticky relay causing the problem. You can trace the wiring from there to the pump located in the fuel tank and check for any problems along the way. You may be able to swap the fuel pump relay for another one in the PDC and get it to start on it's own, this would confirm a relay issue.

If you turn the key to the on position can you hear the pump run for a couple of seconds?

I would get a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve and do some testing. That might yield a clue.

The engine needs a certain amount of fuel pressure to start. You may be experiencing severe fuel pressure drop as the vehicle sits.

49 psi is the idle spec for a 98, plus or minus 5 psi.....that should be verified as well.

Runs for 2-3 second at key on no matter the pressure. Sounds like you have a leak down problem. Bad check valve in the pump

To verify, turn the key to run for 3s at a time about 5 times then attempt to start it.
