New front Hubs......what a difference
OK, I figured out my roaring, humm....whatever was not worn out tires, pads or rotors which I replaced all. It was my hubs. I bought this 96 about 18 months ago with 78k on it. I test drove many Cherokees with similar mileage up to about 100k. They all had this roaring sound some a little more than others. This was my first Cherokee 4x4 and it seemed most told me they all sound like that. Well I got used to it but mine got pretty bad the last month or so. There have been a lot of threads lately about this sound and thoughts of u-joints, pinion bearing or gear, tires, rotors etc. If you are having this noise check the hubs!! I'm not sure how long they are supposed to last but I would suspect if you have 80+k on it it a good chance there going bad. Mine has 98k now but this problem was probably starting when I bought it.
I can't believe how quiet this thing is now..........i swear it feels a like a new one. I can now turn my radio down!! The job is very simple except getting the old hubs off. We even tried a puller but it seemed like it wouldn't pull straight. A hammer, muscle and PB Blaster finally did it. To diagnose the problem get it at the speed the sound is this worse and turn the wheel left and right. If the noise changes in anyway or stops it's most likely the hubs. Anything in the drive line wouldn't change by turning the wheel. My noise nearly disappeared when I turned to the right and got worse going left. My right hub was the worst of the two.

Just out of curiosity: How much were the new hubs? Did you use factory hubs or switch to lock-outs? Thanks!

Stay away from Ebay hubs, they are trash, remember your life rides on these things. I just changed out the hub this weekend to deter some rubbage, and it took about 45 minutes with a break. Pretty straight up job.
Timken and National Bearing are reputable names, you can also get their cheaper versions from the parts store as well, usually with a lowered price, warranty, and different name.
