Neutral Safety Switch issues

So I have read a bunch of the other NSS threads and I think I know what I need to do, but I have an additional issue that I didn't see any reference to.

98 XJ 4sp auto
-intermittenant no start
-will start with key turned to start and move shifter slightly down toward reverse... kind of a contortionist move for me.

Here's what's different, or at least not previously mentioned in other threads:
-shift indicator line on console does not line up with actual gear you select. For example, indicator is not shown (further up) when in park, and indicates neutral when in D4.

So, my suspicion is that I simply need to adjust the shift linkage and/or adjust the NSS. Glass half full, maybe?

Next possiblility is replace (or remove and clean) NSS. Maybe adjust linkage as well.

Hoping it's not any worse than that. Am I on the right track?

Spend $5-10 and get a used shift indicator window from the junkyard. Unless you have an actual issue with the functioning of the shift linkage, you should not be messing with the adjustment.

The NSS is separate from the shift lever and yours probably needs adjustment and/or cleaning.

Thanks. I started looking at the piece that fits in the console around the shifter to see what it was going to take... and the the window itself has play in it. It took just a little pressure to slide it down and line it up correctly.

Now it's off the the junkyard to get a NSS and get the old one replaced before it totally craps out.

Mine doesn't start in neutral when it's doing this. It's every 10-20 starts when this happens and when it does, it will only start by holding the key in the start position and bringing the shifter back partway toward R.

I also verified today that I do not have reverse lights.

Adjust the NSS.

Either clean yours out and readjust it ( not to hard really its in the Haynes/chilton I believe) or just drop the money on a new one. If I were you id clean it first cause you may fix your problem without having to spend money on a new one like i did ( my backing cracked lol)
