need really quick help: oil change and ATF fluid change ?'s

How many quarts of oil does the 4.0 engine take?

How many quarts of ATF does the tranny take when just changing out the oil in the pan?

I'm putting the Mobil 1 oil filter in and valvoline oil (non-synthetic, I don't know what the previous owner used). For ATF I'm using Coastal dextron III stuff (what I've heard is specified for this tranny). Only reason I'm asking is because the XJ didn't come with an owners manual.

thanks,
Ryan

The engine takes six quarts.

The tranny needs about three. Go drive it around after you get it refilled and recheck after about 5-10 miles and add accordingly till you get it filled up.

Why spend $11 on a Mobil 1 filter and not use Mobil 1 fluid?

You can, BTW, use Mobil 1 ATF - it's dextron III certified.

One of the guys told me that the Jeep auto tranny loses a few ponies with synthetic, too slick. For the motor I swear by it. Switching though the entire drivetrain including the differentials you can gain one or two miles per gallon.

I will never figure out why people try to put anything other than Dexron III in their transfer cases and transmissions. They were never designed for anything else and work just fine with that.

In short, there is truth in labling on oil, but only to a point.

When I used to sell farm equipment, I got an oppourtunity to attend a Case/IH class on oil. The topic of discussion was why their new oil would go 500 hours under full duty cycle without needing service and the old industry standard would only go 100. The point was that their base oil did not degrade as rapidly as the industry standard, and even though it was more money per quart, you could make up the difference by extending the change interval. Changing oil on a farm tractor in the field using a service truck is a real PITA.

Anyway, after the class, I asked why they didn't just switch to synthetic base oils if they wanted to prolong the base oil breakdown. The engeneer explained to me that in a diesel application, the problem wasn't getting the oil to not break down, but rather the oil became contaminated because diesels ash and contaminate the oil with it as a result of blow by (20:1 or higher compression tends to do that sort of thing). Apparently 500 hours was the limit for getting the oil contaminated enough where you couldn't retain the ash in solution, and the engine would soon start to get ugly and hurt parts.

If it says dextron III, it's dextron III.

I have 236,000 on my tranny and the only thing I've ever done to it is drain-n-fill every 10K with Mobil 1, but if you change the oil often enough, any fluid will be OK. Come to think about it, that's how often I change the engine oil too.

Nope. Takes transmission fluid.

So does the t-5 in my Mustang. Using gear oil in that will destroy the syncros......
