Need new parts for my np231.

OK So my transfer case needs a rebuild. Never done one before but found plenty of write ups. My problem is getting quality parts at a reasonable price. I feel alot of the kits are way overpriced.

I think Im going with this bearing and seal kit. Half the price as the others includes quality bearings.

Who has the best price on the terra 2low kit?

And finally, what is the part number for the morse chain? Going to stick with the 1" chain unless I open it up and there is major damage. I think JB charging $150 for it is insane. They go for $60-70 on ebay, just wanna make sure Im getting the right one.

Thanks for the information!

Just find a timken rebuild kit. They can be had cheaply as well on eBay. That's what I did. For the chain cloyes is a good brand as well. And Morris 4x4 has all of the little parts you'll need such as the shift fork pads.

I would go ahead and install an SYE if you haven't already.

Thanks for the help. I was looking for a timken kit, but I guess not hard enough. MAD4wd has em for $100!

You dont think that includes the shift fork pads? All the other kits seem to have them listed. Says it includes everything for a complete rebuild. And usa made!

I know that there is a different bearing in the 94 and earlier 231's, but is the chain the same? Rock auto has a cloyes chain listed for 89-97 XJ's. Only $55! A THIRD of the cost of the borg warner/ morse.

CLOYES Part # 10027 High Performance; 1" Wide
Links: 62; Pitch: 1/2 in.; Plates: 15; Transfer Case Drive Chain; New Process 231c/242/233 Elek/elek Shift Transfer Case http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...121&cc=1180213

Pretty sure that will work? I did not know cloyes even made transfer case chains, put a cloyes timing set in my wagoneer last summer. top notch usa quality.

I already have a tom woods sye on my 231. Does this require any special bearings or seals that would not normally be included in the rebuild kit? Going to crack the case open tomorrow after class to make sure nothing else is broken.

Any word on the 2 low kit?

had to order new shocks and rear brake shields for the f250 so I went ahead and ordered that chain. The morse chain PN also has 27 in it, has a 1" width, and 62 links, so I dont see how it could not fit.

Still interested on a good price on the 2 low kit, and if my SYE needs anything special when rebuilding. THANKS!

The best price I could find is about $252 for the TeraFlex 2 low kit. I keep hoping someone will sell one cheaper but thats about as low as I can find.

Yeah in the end I decided it was a want more then a need for my jeep. I do have locking hubs, so I could always do that if I really needed 2wd low.

Ended up with cloyes chain 10-027, which as far as I can tell is correct, for $60 shipped. Made in USA

Ordered the TIMKEN rebuild kit from MAD4x4 for $99 plus $22 3 day shipping. My own fault because I forgot to order it with all my school work. It HAS to be done this saturday because I am going home the following friday to put it back in!

Anyways, $180 is a good deal I think. I got everything for about $30 more then JB wanted just for their chain. I searched and searched and I believe this is the best way to go for a complete rebuild without Crown/Chinese parts!

Ill post an update when I get the rest of the parts and when I actually reassemble the case. Back to studying statics.................

Glad you found good prices. You'll be quite pleased when you get it all together. They are actually surprisingly easy to rebuild as well. Was the first thing I ever rebuilt and it was easy and works fine.
