Need help installing a new distibutor

I've read a few write ups and they all say mark where the distributor was before taking it out. Problem is, this is a rebuilt block so there obviously I can't mark anything. Tips?

The procedure is called "indexing". Basically, you set the engine to TDC, compression stroke on #1 cyl, then drop in the dist so the rotor points at the #1 wire on the cap.

Not sure if there are different details given yours is an HO with a Renix block.
