Mystery hose?
Hi, all... I was just crawling under my '96 XJ when I noticed what looks like a vacuum line and a broken check valve hanging down beside the right side of my (MT) bellhousing. It's bundled with a couple other cables in the area (speedo and something else).
It appears the check valve broke and the vacuum line ended up dangling down between my bellhousing and the right side upper control arm. It's getting dark - and it's raining (a very unusual situation in Arizona...) and I couldn't see anything that looks like it should be connected to that line. Any ideas?

probly the vaccum line for the transfer case. see if it will engage. if the transfer case was swaped with a np231, which is common, the vaccum hose is not used i believe

Well, I finally had time to check out the hose in the light... looks like it's just a vent hose for the transfer case. What I thought was a broken check valve seems to be just a one-way vent. No wonder I couldn't find the "other end" of the vacuum line...
I do still have a vacuum leak somewhere (my A/C blows only through the defrost vents when I'm accelerating of going up a hill)... I couldn't find anything obvious in the engine compartment... any ideas? |

I had a similar issue.
AC would only blow through defroster, Cruise wouldn't work high idle. It was a vacuum hose on the intake.

If you have a small propane torch , turn the gas on but don't light , start motor and run tip of torch along the vacume hose and when your idle rises there's your vacume leak, vacume will suck the propane in and it will make the idle go up .

All it would do is light the torch, hopefully you wouldn't do this in a closed garage, But spraying carb cleaner (also flamable) that leaves a residue that will burn all over the engene compartment seem a little more to be concerned with. The propane will drift away.

The propane (minus the explosion) is a good idea - thanks! Face it, the engine's already full of optimally mixed gasoline vapor and air... I think it can handle a little more "internal kaboom"...
I already tried using a hose (one end to my ear, the other around all the vacuum lines), with no luck. At least the leak is small enough that my cruise control works, and I get air through the lower vents most of the time (though there's always at least half going through the defrost vents). Guess I'd better find the leak before it gets worse and my A/C stops (not an option in August in AZ). |

Vacuum Check Valve Universal by Dorman - Part 47149 - Advance Auto Parts
also check the vacuum check valves , you could be just not holding a vacuum and not have a leak . Brizzle
