mystery box

Does anyone know what the box in the ceiling between my visors is? I have an 89 it has a harness and goes to a red lense that is mounted on the front of the box. I was thinking of removing it maybe using the 12v and ground from the harness for a switch for my lights, if i dont need it.

its an IR reciver for a remote entry system.

on a side note try a little search. this question gets asked alot. some thread even have pictures.
