My XJ Project

Ok, so I am new here, but here is the break down. I have a 97 XJ Sport with 156K, needs a little work, and is a ex-news station rig. So I got this because the motor is "seizing," which is no problem. I picked up a 95 rig with 4.5" Rusty's life, 31", and a 4.5L stroker. That is fine, except when I try and put it together today. I noticed a bit of crank walk on, like 1/8 of a inch. Pull the pan, and there is no, and i mean no thrust surface left. Well maybe, just maybe I will get my project off the ground soon, and pics will be included of the carnage and restoration.

From you old pro's out there, any tips or words of wisdoms about these jeeps specifically?

Cheers,

Matt

Moving on up. I will get pictures of the damage tonight. One question I did have is the exhaust, what would be the down pipe, or intermediate pipe between the header and the cat, what is the replacement for it? I mean that is probably the most restricted part of the exhaust right there.

Suggestions?

Ok here are some of the pic's.

This is the jeep as it sits today. This weekend it will be brought back to life.

Where has the thrust surface gone???

The suspension that will be going on the Jeep. 4.5" Rusty's lift with 31's. Too bad that is the 8.25 with 27 spline...

Regarding the exhaust, I have noticed that part also. Its pretty restrictive. I once considered a borla header which replaces that downpipe with a pipe that has no restriction, its straight round pipe with no compressed area for clearance. I also considered making my own downpipe, it wouldn't be too hard with a mig and some appropriate sized tubing.

I am probably going to make my own pipe, but we will see how that goes. I just don't like the fact I have to cross under the trans.

Why would you want to use the 27-Spline 8.25 rearend from the '95, when you have a 29-Spline 8.25 rear end in the '97? Just remove the springs from the '95 axle, and mount them on the '97 axle.

I am going to take the pieces of the lift kit and put them on the 29 spline rear end.

Anyway, the update is I have most of the engine assembled and it should be going in this weekend, weather permitting. I did have to make a nice priming tool for the engine tonight, and sure enough with a cordless drill I made 20 lbs of oil pressure :-)

Any tips on the whole Rusty's kit. I have most everything there I believe, but I might be wrong... That will probably be a next weekend project anyway.

Pictures will come soon I promise.

Well, I have it all together and driving it around the yard... Now I just need to decide on a front bumper... I am tempted to get the one that shows up on ebay every week.
