my xj hates me
So, ive had on going problems that come and go, one being my jeep not starting until its cooled down. Im not sure what is causing this but, about a month ago my car would not start i thought I had it narowed down to the ground on the engie block. When i replaced that i had minimal issues starting it, untill recently when i drive home from school or any distance over about five miles and shut the car off i will not be able to start it untill about an hour later when the engine has cooled. every once in a while i am able to get it started by taking the enige block ground off and then re attaching it. I dont know what the problem is here its getting really old now. Any one have any Ideas?

check either your crank position sensor or your Hall Effect Sensor inside the distributor, could be either of those 2

Your XJ will not start. But does it CRANK over fine and not start or does it NOT CRANK over at all? Need to clarify that so we can help you better....

buy a new starter. I wouldn't spend the money on a shop visit.

I would say the problem is either the starter, or cables/connections in the starter circuit.
Next time it happens, take a meter and see if you have 12 volts at the starter terminal. If you do, the problem is probably the starter. If you DON'T, then start working your way back towards the battery. This does smell like a starter problem though ![]()

Do you have lights when it's acting up? If not check cables first.
If it turns out to be the starter overheating, might try fabricating a sheet metal heat shield to install between the starter and the nearest heat source. (engine block or header) for a longer lasting fix. Helps keep oil and grease off the starter too. Allen |

well, i had m mechanic look at it and he thinks its the NSS, im not a mechanic but i dont know how having the engine warm would trigger the NSS not to start the car. I dont know though maybe it is that. im getting really sick of my XJ, my break that i replaced a month and a half ago due to siezing siezed up so that is another problem to add to the list.
thanks for every ones help will |

I suppose it could be thermal failure of the NSS. When this happens, have you tried wiggling the shift lever or tried to start it in neutral? If you have some luck with that, then definitely suspect NSS. Also your backup lights are controlled by the NSS. If you have no backup lights when the no crank occurs, that's another vote for the NSS.
You could try removing/cleaning/reinstalling but if it is a thermal failure, that might not help. Price for these varies depending on the year; if you can get a cheap one, I probably wouldn't mess with cleaning. There are also some threads about bypassing this switch. Use SEARCH function for more info.....
