It must be nice setting up the gears yourself and not having to pay someone. How did you learn? Any secrets? I am still debating on whether I should do it my self or just pay someone.

Great build! Nice scores on all the parts too! I like how you guys are fabbing a lot of the parts yourself. Hopefully when my son's old enough he'll take an interested in stuff like this and I can do similar projects with him. He's not quite 16 months old right now though, so in the meantime I may be looking into mods for Powerwheels Jeeps.

If you've got the tools and the time to do it, it's not super technical, just tedious.

Read this: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Gear_Setup/

It's by far the best article on setting up gears that I've read. I really wish I'd found it before I did my gears. Not that I had trouble doing it, just that that article would've made things a bit quicker and easier.

You can find set up specs here: http://www.differentials.com/specsi.html

That is Awesome, I am glad to see you are so involved with your son, and you just made him an addict for life..LOL The nice thing is I had the same great experience builing up a 79 fullsize with a blown engine, and I have been builing jeeps ever since, over half my life.. You are a great dad, and the Jeep is looking awesome, wish I had that nice long arm set up I am jealous.. Keep it up dad of the year...

Thanks for comments everyone! This has been a great project and I'm looking forward to seeing him drive it in Moab in March. The nextproject will be a rig for my daughter when she gets closer to getting her license in about 3 years.

I'll post up more pics this evening.

wow

Wow you guys really did a great job with that and I hope you have a ton of fun with it. What lincoln welder is that? I think its the same as mine and if you used it to weld all that stuff that it reassures me that I don't need a bigger unit when i lift my jeep haha.

I build the LA's as a little side biz for walkin' around money.
The Welder is 175 (220v) that I bought from Lowes.

Found a few on Daniels camera.
Builing the LA's and cross member...

Thought I'd add a few pics from the initial engine tear down.

See the crack? There were actually 3 cracks.

You can tell the head warped pretty good from the rust in the cylinders.
