My buildup

Hey all. Just wanted to throw my build up out there and tell me what you think.

99 XJ with HP D30 and 8.25 out back.

Project to be installed=
6" Full Traction LA kit
SYE and High Angle Driveline driveshaft(sent after lift)
AR 767"s on 4.0 BS
35" or 33" Tires(mtr's...)

And of course fender trimming and gearing, but not until last. This is NOT a daily driver.

I haven't got my tires yet and have been agonizing over 33"s or 35"s. Are they TOO TALL or unsafe on a 6", etc? I am far from hardcore, but like to run Turkey Bay, Haspen(indiana) and Green/Orange badlands.

Thanks for any input.

Thought of getting a beefier rear axle? As well, in my opinion it'd be less safe to run smaller tires on a big lift. GottaBeJeep stuffed 37" under a RE 5.5 ;P

i would recommend 33's sicne you have stock axles. 35's would be stuffed way too much for a 6 inch lift.

Hey Indy by any chance do you know how far the badlands are from deer creek? I'll be camping for Phish for a few days and have maybe one or two to kill. Also what's it cost for a rig + one passenger?

been a while for me...but Id say a good 2 hours from that side of indy, not including traffic, etc.

Not much, I THINK 15-20 or so. Ive been out of the wheeling world since 02 damit!

But getting back in as thread says...eheh

Yes-better axle down the road. Luckily, this is my project wheeler and see what happens. I'm just worried that first major break...and getting home if I dont trailer with my truck. Staying open I think is wise, no locker.

I hear abour RE 5.5's running 35's alot. Hmmm, guy on Jeepin.com has it.

and i hear 33's too small, lol!

thanks for reading...helping on decision.

Yeah, Jason over at Jeepin is running 35"s on his RE5.5 I'd say that's probably the most common biggest tire for that size lift. Probably be about the same for the FT.

Hi Indy.

I would say if you want to run 35's, it wouldn't be that hard to do with a very aggressive trim job. I did (finally) get out to test my RE5.5" suspension and with the fender trimming I did my 33's don't rub anywhere on the fenders. I could do 35's with a little more trimming up front and using extended bumpstops.

About the axles... its good that you have the HP30 and you could beef it up as much as you want to easily take on 35's and possibly even 37's (go with Super 30 kit, and a truss...) For the rear, I am happy with my 8.25 so far even though I did report some droning noise at high speed after the 4.56's were installed. I finally got the new speedo gear in so I can tell now that it occurs above 65 mph so thats not that bad, and the droning sound actually seems to have gotten a little better the past 2 days... But even with the 33's I wouldn't mind being a tad lower to 4.88's if it were possible (4.56 is lowest 8.25 can go) so with 35's it probably won't be ideal, but shouldn't be any worse than my stock gears and 31's were. So it may or may not be a hard decision for you, but if you are looking to do an axle swap in the future you may want to do it sooner rather than later and not put a lot of money into it. Then on the other hand if you use an ARB locker you will have a much stronger carrier than stock and then just use it when you need it and it should be pretty good. YMMV.

So..you are saying the ARB may HELP actually(strength wise)? Besides the locker use itself? Hmmmm...

I believe it does. Of course it will put more force on the shafts when one wheel is off the ground and torque is being applied to the wheel with all the weight on it. But you can upgrade to alloy shafts too. Its basically a never ending cycle of emptying the wallet thats for sure.

you said you like to run green and orange trails at the badlands. i've ran both trails with no problem with 31's and open diff's. i did damage my doors and fenders lol but i didn't have any problems getting through the trial. i didn't need towed or winched. with 33's it would be a dream. i'd say save your axles and go with 33's. hey if you ever wanna go wheeling get a hold of me somehow. i live on the eastside of indianapolis. thanks

Cool-another local XJ'er! Where did you get your gears done at may I ask? That is where I am going to be the most picky obviously. Yes, when it's done sometime I'll be looking for locals to run with, etc.

Thanks all...

Hey I see that there are some Indiana boys here. I live in Bloomington and have been looking for some people to hook up with and do some wheelin. Where are some good spots to go around the state? Also, I read in the paper that the DNR opened a 600 acre off roading area near dugger. Have any of you guys been there and if so, how was it?

Brent

Hey Brent-I live in Trafalgar, 25 miles south of Indy.
Hell, there is a place called Combs Road in Story you can do a mini=run at. I've been to Dugger 2 years ago before officiallyopen. Muddy, but fun. Haspen acres east end of state...MUDDY...fun.
badlands of course.

hey indyxj, i haven't done new gears yet. i wish i had the money to do that now but i can't afford a locker with the gears and i want to do it all at the same time. i am not sure where i will go yet. my brother did his own gears in his trail truck so if he thinks he can set up my gears well enough to run on the street i might have him do it, otherwise i will probably go out to 4 wheel parts and have them do it. i know some people out there that can set me up.

as far as local wheeling spots i suggest combs run, aka nobestone trial, its pretty easy but still fun. little chance of serious breakage. its good to head out to after work and do a night run of it. and its free! yea in a week or so i should be off-road ready. i have to shim my axle to correct my pinion angle but after that i should be good to go. if anyone wants to go wheelin' here local pm me and maybe we can set something up. thanks

dave
