My Auto to Manual Swap Thread
A couple of years ago I decided I wanted to do this and thought I'd done enough research. I picked up an AX15 out of a '97 Wrangler thinking it would work. Turns out the shifter is different and the clocking of the t-case is different as well. I ended up tearing it down due to the mileage it had on it and found a ton of problems inside. SO, it's been sitting in a million pieces in my garage waiting for me to decide what to do with it.
I went to the wreckers to look for a front license plate bracket the other day and what did I find but a '95 XJ with a 5 Speed. It's high mileage as well (289000km) but it shifts good and the clutch feels like it has a lot of life left. I asked the guy how much for the trans and he wants $200 so I think on payday I'm gonna run down and rip as much stuff as I can use off it and get started with my swap
I know a few people have done this swap on here so if they come across this I'd love for them to add some advice or opinions or whatever. I know right now that the master/slave cylinders probly won't work as well as the pedals (going from a '95 to a '98) but to order them new is no big deal. Everything else I figure should bolt right up. Gonna pick up a new clutch just to be safe and then hopefully in a few weeks I'll be in business. A BIIIIIIG write-up will follow with lots of pictures to kinda compliment the sticky that's already in the FAQ section. I'm just sick of my automatic but I don't wanna sell it and buy a 5 Speed......too much done to it right now to part with it
