spooling/welding a front axle is not in your best interests

I personally wouldn't trust the collar to hold up to wheeling with a welded diff.

I'd convert to one piece axle shafts (on the one side at least) and then add an Aussie for $250. That will live a hell of a lot longer and put less wear and tear on your axle shafts.

i think i will go with an aussie and if i do have probs with the actuator then do a one piece swap.... but i want to try the locker with the disconnect because i can disconnect it at any time and have 2wd even 2lo hahaha

If you Aussie the front but disconnect the axle, wouldn't you be in "3-low"?

Ok paint the tread on your tires and make a right or left turn. Then look at the pavement and see if the marks are the same length. They wont be. The outside tire has to spin more than the inside tire so a mini spool or welded gears would not allow you to turn on pavement. A DD would need a air locker or electric locker to be used on pavement all day. Dont even think about messing with the front axle unless youre putting a locker in it

Riiiiight... except for the fact that's he's got the old style vacuum disconnect D30 front end, which is kinda like having a manual hub on one side.

As far as needing an air locker or electric, that's not correct, vacuum disconnect or not. Lunch box lockers, like the Aussie, and the Detroit locker all require power input through the pinion to lock up, so in 2WD they should always be unlocked. If you need to use 4WD on the road, then yes, you're best off with a selectable locker, otherwise in 2WD more any locker should be invisible on the street.
