I was kinda wondering the same thing. Only thing that comes to mind is ultra low sulfur diesel or maybe un limited slip differential, meaing that it's a peg leg.

a good way to tell is if you jack up the rear end and spin one tire. If the other tire spins thte opposite way you have open, if it spins you have LSD or a locker. To findout if its LSD (usually is if its jsut factory) you jack up only one wheel then try to spin the tire. THis will require some significant effort but if you are able to spin the tire and the other side is grounded....you have LSD. lol or your locker is broken. If both tires remain stationary...congrats you have lockers you lucky dog.

The only way knowing if you have LSD is to pop the cover and look at the carrier, or to measure it the FSM way. ..or do tight figure-8s at slow speed on tarmac and see if the inside tire "hops" a little.

How about doing a burnout and seeing if there are one or two streaks on the ground.
1=the one wheel wonder 2=LSD or locker

Get the rear off of the ground. Spin one tire, the other will spin the oposite direction. If it had a LS it both tires would spin in the same direction. Hale |

Again, that does NOT always work!!! Like I just wrote above, I've had three RWD vehicles with clutch- based LSDs that worked flawlessly, and NONE of them showed consistent results with that test...

. But I'm positive that's an open diff. Bmyohn, the shaft the connects the set's of spiders in his diff. is straight, yours isn't. And there lies the difference.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Now that it's verified that my diff is open, I have one other question. The fluid I used has friction modifiers in it. Will this cause any issues with an open differential?

I don't believe it will cause an adverse effects, alot of times in clutch type posi units all it does is reduce chatter.

my mustang lays two very nice 315 sized lsd burnout marks and if you raise the back end and spin one wheel, the other often spins in the opposite direction. just and example of when the wheel spin method doesnt work
