Low idle on renix problem
on my 90 xj with the I6 renix system, iv noticed while idling it seems really low i think under 500. it hesitates a very very small amount when you give it gas. but after about 600 rpm it clears and runs great, alot of power and everything. i also notice while idling i can smell real potent exhaust. enough to mess with my eyes. the engine sounds good while idling but way low. is there somthing i can check? my dad told me the egr gasket going out could cause it to have a low idle and high exhaust smell. any help would be very much appreciated. thanks

low idle on renix
I am not sure if this will help you but it is worth a try. I had an 89 XJ with the same problem when I purchased it, very low idle almost to the point of stalling at times. With the engine turned off, remove your intake hose where it attaches at the throttle body, clean the inner bore of the throttle body with a good throtle body cleaner (Sea Foam, Gummout, etc.). Hold the butterfly open and clean the carbon ridge around the sides and also underneath the butterfly. If there is a large carbon ridge, lighty clean this with a plastic razor blade or similar item and use a good shop vac to suck out any loose carbon before reinstalling the intake tube and starting the vehicle.
The idle on my 89 was always low (nature of the beast) but this procedure helped raise it to the point of not stalling upon stopping. This also helped reduce the "raw fuel" smell from the exhaust. Worth a try and a cheap fix if it helps your situation. Good Luck

Could be a TPS problem. Possibly flooding with fuel because the ECM thinks the throttle is somewhere besides closed.

While cleaning the throttle body pull the Idle Air Controller off and clean the needle pin and bore, do not to try and turn the pin or the thread lock will bust and you will need to replace it.

i ran seafoam through it today with no difference in engine speed. i got almost no smoke with 1/2 a can. there was very very little carbon on the throttle body. i`ll try pulling the IAC tomorrow and see if that increases it at all.
