Low/Crawl ratio questions
I went wheelin on thursday and had a great time. No problem for me at all. The girl I went with was driving an '88(I believe) toyota. She offered to let me drive hers over this little hill thing that I didnt think it could go through(and it didnt). Popped it into 4L and low on the tranny and the yota crawled. Seriously it hardly even moved. It was the first time I have ever been impressed by a "yota."
With my jeep, I cant notice a difference between 4hi and 4low, it doesnt matter what I shift the tranny to. Shouldnt mine be about the same. Time to get my transfer case worked on?

There is a way to wire in a Override switch into the older AW4 trans. It will not hold first on it's own. Check the Tech/FAQ sticky for the links to it.

you should feel a huge diff between 4 hi and 4 lo, 4 lo gears your drivetrain down to almost 1/3 of 4 hi.......
i know with my 5 speed 1st gear in hi is about the same "feeling" as 3rd in lo |

Mine starts off in 2nd when I shift into 4 low. I think they all do that. This is the major drawback with the AW4.

Mine doesn't, but I usually leave it in 1-2 when I am in 4low. That migt be why, it holds 1st forever that way.

So am I looking at a transmission problem or a transfer case problem?
My '90 laredo has an automatic transmission. Im not sure which one though. Her toyota was automatic also. I was planning on taking the Jeep into the shop to have some brake work done on my day off. Maybe I should get the other stuff looked at as well(and spend alot of money).

Some rigs just need more of the long and skinny.

There is a huge difference between 4hi and low on my '01. In 4hi it feels just like 2wd. 4low and in 1st gear is a different story, it "pull" forward when you're stopped, and engine breaking is much more effective.

here's the Transfer case skinny lowdown:
If you have a manual, use 4LO and 2nd gear to start off. 4LO and 1st are way too short for gearing, the peak output stress at all points of power train are about met and this is where you break parts. Use 2nd gear to start off in if you can. If you have an automatic, this is why in 4LO it starts in 2nd. Per the forum, there is a sticky on how to install a bypass wire and switch to allow the tranny a 1st gear start. I wouldn't recomend it, per the above manual tranny info, for the same reasons.

I always run mine in 4LO and the tranny in 1st unless I'm crossing a mud hole, which is rare. I haven't had a problem with powertrain breakage.
