Well, i dont have pics yet. But Im working on it.

Some **** who owned the jeep before me was a sticker nut. Stickers ALL OVER the back hatxch, and it looked awful. (You know the stickers: Uncle bobs 4wd shop, NRA, KBUL 107.5 FM country, a rebel flag, ("Proud ta be a rednick") Buy union, buy american, a Klan rally sticker, and a swastika. ..............all stuck DIRECTLY to the paint instead of the window or bumper)

I got a heat gun and removed all the stickers. .......Then I got a little crazy. I removed the "JEEP" emblems. Then I heated up and removed the "4.0 LITRE" emblems..........Then....the pinstripe came off.

When you peel the emblems off, do it with a paint scraper, pry AWAY from the paint. Next, once all of the stickers are off, SCRUB the whole area down with laquer thinner and a washcloth to remove all the goo.

Now that the back hatch is clean, I wet sanded it with 800, 1200, 1500 and 2500 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

THEN, to MAKE IT SHINE LIKE GLASS........I used a high speed buffer and a foam polishing pad, and used 3M's medium fine cut rubbing copmpound, followed by 3M polishing compound ("swirl mark remover")..It looked awesome.........

....But then I used 3M "Finesse it". That stuff is AWESOME. (Expensive, tho')Its a microfine polishing compound that closes up all microscopic scratches and marks by knocking them smooth and polishing it. UN FREAKIN BELIEVABLE how it shines. Better than my buddies brand new car, BY FAR.

It looks super stealth, its a black XJ, so removing the emblems really cleaned up the back area. Pretty awesome, thought Id share.

Don't put laquer thinner on your paint. Otherwise your paint will look like mgertsch's in no time.

You can use a clay bar for that or rubbing compound, they both work wonders. Trust me, I used to run a detail shop as well as removing & laying pinstripes, graphics, and emblems.

Also, rather than scraping to get behind emblems and pull them off, use a heat gun or blow dryer to heat it up, then take a piece of fishing line and work it back and forth between the body and them emblem. That alone will remove most of the goo.




EDIT: Also, to remove pinstripes painlessly... There is an air tool that can be bought at some place like Harbor Freight, it's fairly inexpensive, and it basically "shaves" it right off the paint w/o damaging the finish. It's a HELLUVA lot faster than the heat gun/scraping meathod.

Harbor Freight has heat guns for under $20. If you are only going to use it once in awhile or for light to medium duty jobs it'll do just fine.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the whole washing of the paint real well after the laquer thinner wipedown.

Only use the laquer thiner on the seriously ytough goo spots, and wipe it down real good with soapy water afterwards, or it will soiften and crack the paint. It DOES work well, however.

Pinstripe removal:

Heat gun or hair dryer, warm, sunny day. Pinch the edge with your thumbnail, and peel whatever portion you can back. Keeping it warm, attempt to peel it off. If this does not workkkkkkkkkkk..........

Get thin piece of flexible plastic under there. I used a sliver of a body filler knife and my thumbnail. Peeeled as much off as I could, then hit it with the laquer thinner to get the remains off.

Napa sells a product they call a vynyl erasure it costs 14.99 and will eat right through stickers without damaging paint it is what detail shops use. its good that you got good results from your process but imo its was a combination of luck and being careful but overall laquer thinner and razor blades are bad for paint.

I did that and it gives the jeep a cleaner look. I used a heat gun/professional goo gone and it came off fairly easy.

Actually, it will.


But, it's a trickey process. The clear delaminates from the base paint, but doesn't do it uniformly. It will however come OFF with enough buffing/wet sanding/scotchbrite, you just have to be careful not to go too deep and wreck the base. Then you can clear coat it again and it'll look about 100000X better than that.


Or say f' it and paint it flat black or olive drab.

so you detailed your car ??? I've debadged every car i've had since 16...always thought it looked better. why'd u skip the clay bar ?

yeah my and my friends always debadge everything. just use a blowdryer for hair it works fine. use WD40 afterwards to get all the glue and stuff off. make sure you wipe it clean and wash the WD40 off good afterwards. check otu the first link in my signature, its my jeep completely debadged
