looking to get the G/F an xj would like to get her one with a d44 rear, need help

I am a TJ guy and am looking to get my G/F an xj.

I would like to get her one with at least a d44 in the rear if not one up front too, but I would settle for a d44 in the back and d30 up front. My question is this (and yes I know this info has been posted again and again, but I cannot dig it up with a search) what does a d44 look like? My TJ has d30 in the front and d35 in the rear, so I know what they look like, but what about the d44?

Also, we test drove a 97 grand cherokee lareado and it had a full time and a part time 4wd setting, does that mean that it has a center differential for the full time 4wd like a subaru? Is this any indication of the axle type?

What about the fulltime / part time 4wd buisness? Does that mean it has a center diff? does it mean that the front and rear diffs have limited slip?

To find a factory D44 you will need to buy a 87 XJ or find a junk yard D44 and bolt it up.

The D44 was never an option on the US and Canadian XJ, just the south american ones.

The TCase you are referring to on the XJ is a NP242. It has the equivilant of a diff in the case, but it's not necessarily one. It will allow for different speeds of the front and rear DS.

What does she want to do with the XJ? Lift? Tires? Terrain?

Sorry, didn't see the other question.

The rear diffs were offered with a Trac-lok LSD, the fronts were never offered with a factory LSD.

she will most likely not do any serious off roading (though I might be tempted to play with it a little hehe). She is interesting in being able to get to work in the snow (we have a long steep gravel driveway and live out a rural state route). She also is liking the idea of the full time 4wd since I have explained why you have 2wd, 4wd full time, and 4wd part time. She is from Los Angeles, we live in rural KY, she is a little afraid of driving the back roads in the rain and snow. We would like to be able to pull a small trailor with it so I am looking for one with the 318 instead of th I6, this is also partial reason for wanting the heavier axle which it seems might not be an option on a 97 or newer cherokee.
we will most likely put 31X10.5X15 bf goodrich T/A all terrains on it for her, this is what I run on my TJ and have gotten good even service out of them.

D44's are hard to come by, but you can check your junkyard periodically, as stated. Until you find one, look for an XJ with the Chrysler 8.25, instead of the Dana 35, as it is a little beefier. How much weight are you trying to tow?

not a bunch, I have a little fiberglass jon boat that we haul (my 4.0L ranger hauls it fine) and we would like to be able to tow a 1500lb +/- trailor on the interstate

Alright, I think you are looking for a grand Cherokee and not a XJ. The XJ was never offered with a V8, so I will move it to that section. FYI the ZJ did have an aluminum D44 available.

ah, I appologize, I was not aware that a cherokee and a grand cherokee where different models. well, hello grand cherokee people, anybody here got any suggestions?

your in the wrong forum bud. this is the cherokee forum, XJ, your looking for a grand cherokee, ZJ. the ZJ is available with a 318 (5.2) V8, the XJ isnt, only 2.5 or 4.0.

Also, all the V8 ZJ's come with a d44 rear. they have an aluminum center section, and while they are better than a d35, for wheeling or increased power, the tubes WILL spin

All 96-up V8 Grand Cherokee's have the D44a.

Also sence you seem alittle confused

XJ=84-01 Cherokee
ZJ=93-98 GRAND Cherokee
WJ=99-04 GRAND Cherokee
