Hi,
I am new to Jeeps and was looking at a well maintained Cherokee (I6 4.0 liter, auto). The vehicle has 35000 miles on it . The owner has other 4x4 toys ( gelandewagen, disco ,etc). He is asking 10000$ for it. I know these model jeeps are pretty robust. Anything i should look for. Thanks
I have driven mostly german cars and it would be nice to have a solid US sourced vehicle.
well with only 35,000 miles on it i highly doubt there is rust but always check for rust on a jeep
check
belts
tires
drive it for a long period of time
get a service record
carfax it
drive it again
check the 4wd (make sure it works)
see if it drives strait
check for malfunctioning switches, lights, etc
maybe even take it to a trusted mechanic to look over the whole thing
also i have never seen a used cherokee with 35,000 so i dont really have something to refrence it to, but always try and work the seller down on price, go to KBB and check what they have to say then go from there. But at least drive it a couple of times and make sure its the vehical that you want to be driving and make sure you know exactly what works good on it and what will need to be replaced.
Not sure what your plans are for it but if you are going to lift it its got a Low Pinion Dana 30 :brickwall but if you are leaving it stock its not an issue. but something to think about is the 0331 head...prone to cracking...but it doesnt happen to all of them...mine has 102k on it with no issues.
Can someone give me the run-down on the LP D30. This, and already mentioned 0331, as well as a distributorless ignition, are basically the only differences between the 00 and years previous.
What about the LP makes it a pain to work with lifted? WMW, dont you have one at 3 inches?
Also, 35 K is very low mileage, just buy it, at 8 or 8500, its a steal!

the only problem with the LP D30 is that with the lower pinion it adds a steeper angle on the front drive shaft...and yes i have a 3.5" lift but im dumping it this summer for a HP D30 :2thumbsup:
In my opinion the coil rail is a money shot...ive never had problems with mine, no coil to worry aobut, no distributor to seal up and maintain, no wires to replace and you can run other plugs than Champion Truck Plugs...the distributed 4.0's dont really like anything else...mine runs like a top on Bosch Platinum 2+.
im not very well versed in the 0331 head area, although i should be seeing as i have one...but from what i understand they changed the casting on these heads and there is a weak spot inbtween the number 3 & 4 cyl. someone else please chime in that knows the details.
Oh and with that low mileage motor you can switch to synthetic oil with no problems :cheers2:
*edit* most of this stuff has been mentioned and discuessed to death on here...should be eaisly found with a search
1) Take a loooong test drive and let the AC run. Should continue to blow cold. Ask owner if he's had to recharge the AC with freon. Cherokee's evaporator coils are notoriously cheap and cost $1000-1200 to replace (have to remove dash to access it). Might be a good idea to ask the owner to have a leak test done on it, if you have any suspicion at all that it may be leaking freon.
2) Check exhaust manifolds (if it's a 4.0L) very carefully for cracks / leaks. Until Jeep went to the 2-piece manifold (I forget what year that was), they had a terrible problem with exhaust manifolds cracking.
3) Check the area of the tailend of the oil pan for oil. Could indicate a leaking rear main seal or oil pan gasket. Another common occurance on 4.0L's...even lower mileage ones.
well im at 3.5" now...but im going to 5.5" this summer....:shhh: no vibes right now but its just a weak point i would like to eliminate.
