long crank time??

Hey, I've got a 91 cherokee briarwood, when I try and start it it takes quite a long time to start, 10 or more seconds, I repaced the fuel pump and the pressure regulator, and it still does it. Any suggestions? coil, crank sensor...?

Jake

I think the standard responce to this symptom is check the Crank Position Sensor. Should be on the drivers side upper portion of the bell housing. Cheepest I've found it is acctualy at the dealer. Dealers in my area want about 50 bucks and the auto stores range from $75 to $115. You might want to check things like the battery, terminals, cables, starter, plug wires, ect. There is a test you can do with a multi meter on the CPS, your shop manual or Chiltions will have the specifics.

moojamboo2,

To let you know the older Cherokees are pron for this, most people I have talked to say that it takes about 10 sec's for there Jeeps to turn over. I would also check the crank position sensor as Local_42 said but still this is quit normal for they older cherokees.

Try this, when you start it turn the key to the run position and let the fuel pump pressure up for 2-3 seconds before you start cranking it, might help a little.

Dirty or "bad" fuel injectors will cause the same symptom, so don't rule those out. Many times new injectors (though usually expensive) will solve it. At least they are very easy to change on the 4.0, as easy as spark plugs!

how about trying some "injector cleaner" stuff? does any of this actually work? my 94 has been taking increasingly long to start-up of late, but it can't be the CPS as i replaced it less that 5K miles ago. so i'm thinking either dirty injectors, or old wires, plugs, distributor rotor (new ones on the way).

As much as I firmly believe that additives are Usually JUNK, there are some that I do believe work, and fuel injector cleaner is one of them. I have used it successfully and would recommend it. Don't buy a no-name brand, get a name you have heard around for a while, like STP, Snap, etc. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I find that the cheaper (2-3 dollar) injector cleaners work well for light cleaning and to keep them clean by using a bottle every few tankfuls. Avoid the 99 cent stuff, its useless. For heavier deposits I have found the best bang for the buck is Chevron Techron (6-8 bucks), a Jeep tech turned me on to it. I have also used Castrol fuel system cleaner (think it was about 10 bucks) with good results. There's also a procedure that tune up shops do where a pressurized can of cleaner is hooked up to the fuel rail directly and the engine runs off the can till its empty, I've never had it done but I've seen it done and couldn't believe the amount of black crap that blew out of the tailpipe, actually coated a spot on the shop floor with black soot and goo. You have to have the equipment for that one, and they charge about 60 or 70 bucks for it. I wouldn't try that unless the pour ins don't work.
Just my 2 cents.

PS the last high mileage vehicle I got (81 280zx turbo with 153K) I had to run Techron for 3 consecutive tanks before it ran right.
