liner

what is this liner under the engine? it looks like some kind of cardboardish material, i just got this jeep bout a month ago and i noticed it, i'm guessing it's just for looks but i could very well be wrong, it's torn etc, and i'm wondering if i should just rip it off or replace it. what are the advantages and disadvantages of this liner.

It's a splash guard. It is supposed to keep water from splashing up into the engine bay. It's not the most effective thing in the world, but with where the alternator is located it's good to have.

allchryslerparts.com has them for $27.77 before shipping. Go there and do a search for "shield" in their oem parts. It's probably the same at most dealerships.
