Left tail light & trailer tail lights not working

My left tail light, license plate light, and trailer tail/running lights all don't work now after I hooked up my boat trailer. The trailer light plug has indicators on it, and the third light (the tail/running light one) does not come on. So it also makes sense that the left tail light is caused by the same problem, as the trailer wiring runs down that side of the vehicle. I have checked all of the fuses and bulbs, and the ground wires on the trailer. I have the factory manual, but the electrical part was written for a professional it looks like. Anyone ever have this problem or know what else I might look at?

I love my Jeep but I have had more elctrical problems that I would expect. This, the fog lights and switch doesn't work, the drivers side speaker doesn't work (after I repaired the wiring in the door even), the reverse lights don't work sometimes (I cleaned the neutral switch), the door locks go on and off randomly sometimes (so I had to take the fuse out for those)....uggh!

Did you check the taillight fuses in the Cherokee ? Did you install the trailer light adapter/wire harness or did someone else do it ? Is it a plug and play type of adapter or a cut and splice the wires together type ?

There in an unmarked fog light fuse in the PDC under the hood, check that first. The fog light switch is the next most common problem. It is usually burned out and you should be able to tell by looking at it if it needs to be replaced.

The other problems are also not uncommon and other Forum members have posted how to fix them.

i would bet that the converter that plugs into your wiring harness has messed up. the trailer wiring harness plugs in between the factory harness and the driver's side light harness. so if the converter has tanked on you, the trailer and driver's side light could be effected.

i would suggest getting a cheap $2 ground tester and start probing wires.

I had a similar problem, took of the left rear plastic panel, and found the little black box for the converter. I found no wires disconnected or chafed, but simply wiggling things around in there worked for me.

Depending on the wiring setup, the converter might plug in to your harness (check the plugs for corrosion) or might use those cheap, crimp-on connectors which pierce the wire and tap in to the power. These are also prone to corrosion.

Short answer: open up the left rear by removing the interior panel and rattle things around a bit, then take it from there inspecting plugs/splices/etc.

Good Luck!

well now I noticed the front left parking light is out as well. Could the converter or something by the trailer wiring harness cause that problem? I have checked all of the fuses, and all of the other functions on those light work (turn/brake/healdight). Any ideas?

Remove the trailer adapter and see what happens. Otherwise you should be looking for broken/damaged or short circuited wires.
