I'm curious as to why when I'm sitting, trying to turn the wheel it'll go easy, then get tight like I hit a wall, then go a little bit more, and do the same thing.. Also, tire size? It has 235/75/R15's, and I believe I can hear/feel them rubbing when I turn as sharp as it'll go. Another thing, I started driving it, and it felt like my back tires were running over a board over and over, but it went away, as if it was sticking? Any help would be great, thanks :2thumbsup:

I'm curious how long you've had the XJ now, and guessing it had been sitting unused for a while. She may have some creaky bones until she gets loosened up again. As for your second question, it sounds to me like the tires were flat-spotted from sitting but rounded up again with a little use.

Yes, it sat for a long time... The guy takes care of his vehicles, motor at least... He would let the motor run for at least an hour once in a while, since they weren't using it.. But after driving a bit it went away aside the steering thing didn't... I read that the XJ is supposed to have 215 or 225/75/r15, not 235s... the tires look round, they only rub when they're turned all the way in either direction. I've only had it since this post basically... maybe the day before :P Drove it 1 hour home.

If the steering shaft has a u-joint in it that could be your steering wheel issue. Just like a bad u-joint in a driveshaft but at a slower speed of rotation.

I will check the shaft tomorrow.. Thank you. Trying to think up other things.. Oh when I start it, it doesn't like to run till its warmed up a bit, would this be vacuum leak? Or just a typical old jeep that likes to be warm?

If it does have a u-joint pop the shaft off at whatever end is easiest and move shaft around in all directions if it binds the i-joint is frozen.

Okay, Thank you. The steering works once you're going without locking up. It just seems like the power steering pump kicks on and off when you're not moving.

Could very well be a vacuum leak causing the cold rough idle. 1986 was during the Renix era which brings some unique quirks. Is your a 4 or 6 cylinder?
Oh and you're right about the tire width causing the rear of the inboard front tire to rub on the LCA during sharp turns. You can use a washer or two to shim the steering stops out to where it won't turn far enough to rub, but if you drive it very often you'll soon know just how far you can turn the wheel before it rubs.

Its the 6 cylinder i was told it was a 2.5L but i think its the 2.8L.

If is a V style engine it should be the 2.8L V6

Make sure the power steering belt is tight enough.

235/75r15 is a typical +1 size for the Cherokee, and they will rub the LCAs at full lock (at least mine do...).
You can adjust the steering stop bolts, but then your turning diameter increases.

Felt the belts, they're all loose, there are 3, is there supposed to be three? On the door of the cherokee it says stock tire size is 205/75/r15... so I would guess being up at 235 it rubs.

Loose belts will cause the problems that you describe with the steering and will screw with cooling and alternator.
