Jeep wont start

alright so my jeep wont start after I sunk it in a hole up wheeling, I pulled the starter and the starter is suprisingly still in good condition, but the jeep wont stat. its not water locked or anything. I know the battery that was in it is crap now. I tried to put a different battery in it but I dont think the battery was strong enough to actually turn it over, so I dont know what to do, any help whould be greatley aprreciated, thanks..and for further information its a 1991 jeep cherokee 4.0 HO.
