Jeep temperature gauge broken.

Hello Jeep Forum. This is my first post.

So the temperature gauge in my 1988 Cherokee (6cyl 4Liter) Recently went out. The temperature gauge has since rested all the way on the right hand side of the gauge (Past the Red over heat area). Occasionally it will start working again for a few moments, giving me a reading of normal temperature.

How do I get my temp gauge working again? Pics of what to do would be awesome since I'm not very good with vehicles.

Thanks Jeep Forum!

The wire for the gauge plugs in at the driver's side rear of the head. Is the wire shorted out to bare metal causing the gauge to peg?
