Jeep not starting

I'm having an issue with my 88 Cherokee 4.0. 9 times out of 10, it starts. 4 times out of the 9, it starts at 2500 rpm then drops to normal. The other 5 no problem. But 10 percent of the time, it starts normal and runs up in rpm up to 2500 and wont go down. Then I shut it off and it wont start at all. Other times I would just let it sit for 30 minutes and it would start up normal. But today after starting it this morning and having the increasing rpm issue, I shut it off and tried restarting with no results. Its been 6 hours now.

Your TPS is taking a dive on you most likely.

But, before replacing and adjusting it, click on the link in my signature and do the procedures outlined in posts 1,2,and 3.
Post 8 explains how to adjust the TPS.

Above the brake booster is a C101 connector on '87 and '88 XJs and MJs. When the Renix connections corrode (per usual) it acts that way. It could also be the fuel pump relay (mine did that before I swapped relays)

Wasn't the TPS. Bought one, installed it, no difference. It started, but it started before I installed it. Went and spent $150 on a new Idle Stepper Motor. Haven't installed it yet, truck still starting. Hit and miss situation. Have the stepper and torx bit in truck just in case.

So, rather than do the cheap and easy proven stuff, you decided to replace parts?
