you realize how much structural integrity you're taking away????
and all you did was toss in a cheapo roll bar in the back. did you tie that into the body any more than those two back points?
at least get some frame stiffeners on there.
at the very least.
I'd suggest a full cage too. but you're probably not interested in that

yeah, in the beginning of the thread shows the layout of the roll cage I will be building. I finished cutting the roof tonight and lifted up the front left right off the ground to see how much strength was lost in the processed (and if you read through, you will have seen how I was very concerned about the strength that might be lossed)... and believe it or not, my doors shut as if nothing had ever happened, trunk, everything. Shes as straight as a bullet my friend. I am actually suprised its as strong as it is. But I appreciate the concern.

now, if I were to do this with a volkswagen... things would be a little different

ps. vanagons are a unibody too...

and these are for spaceman spiff

..my left rear door stopped working about a month ago thus why it wasnt open like the rest.

As you can see, the rear tire actually raised up too.... like I said, shes straight! believe it or not. I pushed all the doors in with a touch of the finger... Unibodies should be respected just a little bit more!!

AWESOME!!! That looks so cool. can't wait to see it finished. wondering about how you're going to hinge it... Did you source the VW hinges too? Or do you have something else in mind? Tailgate hinges?

Keep it up. Glad you work fast and that your project isn't taking 6months.

Looks fantastic! How much extra space does it give you? Are you going to hang a hammock in it? How about a light on the inside? I had a cool swivel airplane light in a past truck, it was convienent.

This thread deserves 'Best Build' status.

I pulled all the hinges and do-dads that came with it. It actually doesnt just hinge, but when the top goes up, it actually brings the front up and foward as well. Ill post pics later today...

And so far, it gives me approx 8 - 10 inch's more headroom when the top is down. I have yet to see how high it will go. Im planning on putting the orginal light back in, But I still havent looked into how I will go about doing so. And those swivel plane lights are awesome!!! A friend of mine is restoring a cessna 150 and I believe those have the swivel lights too... but I may be wrong.

first let me say that this is a great idea and i can't wait to see the finished product. but im a little confused about how the whole bed idea will work. what does it rest on? how do you get up there? what does it look like fom the inside? never seen one of those buses with the top lifted in person. anyways props on the build.

Very intriguing indeed. I'm sure by the time you hit the road you'll figure out everything that needs to be done. Two thumbs up from me.

BTW, is your radio a pioneer deh-5500?

Fitting the top preparing to line the hinges...

After the hinges are in place... Ill take the roof back down, sand and paint the bottom side and make it all pretty

Coming from brooklyn, head towards scranton pa via 81 / 380... Binghamton is right across the pa border line into new york. Its about 190 miles or something like that from brooklyn. 3 1/2 hours.. I use to travel this a lot back and fourth from Long Island...

and yes, my radio is a 5500. I love it! I use to have the same one in my vanagon... sold it with the car.. but recieved this vehicle and it also had the 5500! haha.. so it all works out in the end.
