Hmm... after looking at the picture with the flat black edited onto it it gave me a good idea... you should have the top fitted with black canvas. I'm sure if you had it treated it could hold its color as well as paint. Plus it would look sweet (safari? military look) and add to its weather proofing!

Didnt get much accomplished today. Cut and formed the back piece... then took a strip of aluminum (about 3" wide ) and started to rivet it down. But didnt realize I had only 4 rivets the size I needed, so Ill have to wait till tomorrow to buy some more and finish.

The strip lays flat across both sections... so when its all done it should look pretty good. And of course painted will make the world of difference. Its def scary to look at tho...... I'm just getting ansy to get it painted to see the final result.

Tomorrow I will be
- picking up more rivets, and cutting the strip.
- Going to the joan's fabrics and browsing their surplus. (im going for a black or dark grey canvas like mentioned by ausi02)
- Purchasing rubber for around the edges
- Picking up satin black paint for the roof and rolling it on.

I also have to figure out what to do about the 6" hole thats cut on top of the roof... any suggestions?? I was thinking about pulling a window out of an old van and placing it on top where it broke, but idk if the roof could support one.

Brace the area (like the rest) where you put the window? I think that would make it so much cooler... haha.

*idea* My dad's full size dodge van, as well as our trailer, have pop-up vents/windows, maybe you could find one of those instead?

that would be sweet actually!!! I could do two side by side. I wonder how heavy there are and how I would remove them from another vehicle without damaging them.

Probably not too heavy, the trailer either has an aluminum or fiberglass top, neither of which are TOO strong. If set up properly maybe they could actually add strength to the top? I'm willing to bet the lip of the frame just uses either pop rivets or self tapping screws, doubt you could do much damage if you're careful...

hmm, Ill take a gander out to the yard tomorrow and try to find something.. But if I were to do it, Id rather have two smaller ones that would be pushed near the sides rather than one larger one in the middle. I have no doubt that it could support that. The only problem is that there are no trailers down there. Maybe I can find an old van with pop top windows? And I would have to find two identical ones....

The other problem with this is the fact that the westfalia top actually arcs quite a bit width wise as shown in some of the pictures. Vw's loved making round cars haha... Idk how that would effect the straight windows if I were to put them on top.

Also, If I end up cutting a hole in the roof and a window doesnt fit right.... ahhh im outta luck.

Just thinking about the pro's and con's cause theres nothing else to do tonight and im extremely bored. Either way, Ill go to the yard tomorrow and see if i can first locate any and do some measurements and try and find a pair. If I can get a low enough price on them ill pick them up and bring them home to the labritory!! :P

Thanks for the idea sir!

That's really cool and unique. I could definitely see this becoming an aftermarket mod, if not your own company some day. You should patent the idea.
