Don't worry, its a Jeep. This looks like a crazy amazing idea. Just wait until you go on your next wheeling outing and people say "WTF?" You just smile and climb into your (hopefully) weatherproof sleeping cabin.
The light bar roof protection sounds good. I agree with you on waiting until the roof is on so you can fab it up to check the look. Keep it up, this looks like a ![]() |

Nice idea. Its pretty cool to see something that hasn't been done (to my knowledge) before! A lot of guys like the roof-top tents, and others have cut the top of the Cherokee off before but I have yet to see this done.
Keep going with it and I look forward to seeing pics of the progress!

For the steering box bolts, make sure to soak the bolts with some pb from the steering box end, you can see them sticking through.. you can try some heat to but make sure you isolate it to the area the bolt goes through. If they break then pull the box and continue treating the bolts, then get some vice grips on there and you should be able to turn them out. Your going to want new bolts anyway since you're using half inch thick bumper brackets.

awesome awesome idea! as for being able to put a rack on it and support the weight, you could reinforce the pop top itself and run linear actuators to raise and lower it. i down you'd be able to lift the rack loaded but i'm assumign your camping gear woulf be down and in use at that point.

ok, Sadly, my alarm didnt go off, i must have set it wrong or something.... so i woke up around one this evening and just returned from yanking the other section of the roof. This section was anchored to the roof and was used as a storage rack... but since the front piece only has the front side that folds down (the back is cut straight across) im going to have to mend the back of the second section to the pop top so it fits all around.

to eric:
I looked all over the interenet and couldnt find anything like this. They make them for f/s land cruisers in europe for like 6 grand???? and even thats hard to locate and find. Plus their kits arnt just a pop top, but an entire kit that cuts off the top and rear and kinda just puts a large box in side of the truck that extends the top and rear about 4 - 6 more feet. So, im hoping I can complete the project where it can be done cheaply, be fully functional, and look like it was made for the truck as well. That way maybe other folks can do the same type of thing.

Interesting, you chose a 1-year only Westfalia top! That is from a 1972 bus...sweet score!
Looking forward to seeing this, tops that are not white blend right into the car's body. I think you've got it. Nice thing is, if it rolls, just replace the fiberglass ![]() -Brandon 1965 Unimog |
