Jeep cuts off when making right turns

I've got a 93 sport, manual trans, 4.0L, 130,000 miles that has a couple of issues with it. First is that the engine quits sometimes when I turn right. It starts right back up and I have gotten good at dealing with the loss of powersteering in a turn . But this is obviously very annoying. Also the acceleration can be really rough from time to time, usually as I approach 35-55 mph, it just kind of sputters and punching the gas doesnt help.

I plan on taking the jeep in to have it looked at but would like to know if anyone has heard of these problems so I can tell them what to look for.

Thanks guys

Fuel pump maybe? Does it tend to stall more when you have less than a half tank of gas?

I've always heard of the problems with left hand turns. (including myself) I will drop the tank one day and figure out what the deal is......

I haven't noticed what the fuel level has been when it stalls, it hasn't done it recently and I just got gas last week so I will have to pay attention to that next time it happens

The newer XJs have the problem when they are low on gas and turn left. I have a similar problem to yours with the sputtering, and found my fuel pressure low - Im counting on getting a fuel pump and sending unit soon to fix the intermittent problem.

LOL!!! I was about to post the same thing. I have an 87 Laredo and ive only owned it for about 2 months now and its cut off on me 5 times and all on right hand turns!! Usually when coming to a slow down to make the right hand turn, or right after the turn is made. Either way, i can usually tell because the power steering immediately fails. I put the the tranny in "neutral" (i have an auto) and it starts right back up so i keep trucking.

Anyway, i have heard of this phenomenon before and only when making right hand turns but im not sure from where. Do a search on this board or try this link:

Sounds stupid, but my battery was grounding out when I would turn right. THe positive post would hit a bracket on the engine and kill it. Would start back up and run fine until I turned right again.

Probably isn't your problem, but worth looking in to.

Well, My gas got to about a qtr tank and voila! it stalled out 3 times today. Gonna see about getting it looked at, will suggest the fuel pump like JTruel and cfkingfish suggested.

Thanks, I will let you know if that helps.

It could be a loose wire or something shorting in the steering column. I had a friend that had the same problem.

Yup 1/4 tank is when starts cutting out. Once I gas up it runs fine.

Well, I took it to Goodyear and they agreed that the fuel pump could be the culprit but said that they werent 100% sure, but I told them to replace it anyway. I picked my jeep up tuesday afternoon and nothing has changed. It still has sputtering problems and has cut off on me.

However, I just filled up this morning and the sputtering problem is still there and it even cut off during a turn as well.

In the meantime I have been reading up on the forum and have thought that maybe my CPS, TPS, or O2 sensor could be bad and was going to take it to AutoZone or someplace to have their computer check it out.

But I read a post that said if you turn the key to on and off a couple of times (never cranking mind you) that the check engine light will stay lit for a couple seconds and then start blinking any error codes. This worked but unfourtunatly the light blinked 55, which is "End of Code Output" so none of my sensors are sending error codes.

I'm thinking about changing my fuel filter since I dont think they changed it when they put in a new pump (although they charged my an arm and a leg)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks guys

Mine started out with the exact same problem. Now it doesnt want to start many times unless its in neutral. I mean it will start in Park "most" of the time, but if it doesnt, it always starts in Neutral. It doesnt cut off on me while driving anymore, it just seems like my problem has morphed into this Neutral starting stuff. I dont mind, its no big deal. I just throw it in Neutral and fire her up!! Hope yours doesnt start doing the same.

Update on my problem.

I replaced my fuel filter a couple weeks ago and things are the same as always. I'm thinking about cleaning my throttle body before buying any sensors. Does anyone have any suggestions/things to watch out for when doing this. It doesnt look too hard but I want to make sure before I start.

I have also read about aftermarket fuel pumps going bad, should i call Goodyear (who replaced it) and find out what brand they used? I'm definatly not taking it back to them cause for the price they charged me I expect the pump to be made of gold!

Also, anyone think this could be a vacuum or exhaust related problem? Mabye I'm just paranoid but it seems like I have been hearing strange vibrations coming more from under the jeep than the engine compartment.

Thanks again guys

If you would like to clean your throttle body, this may be the cause if it is really gunked up. When cleaning, use a solvent like brake cleaner, and make sure that no large particles get into the intake manifold - they will be sucked into the engine, and thats no good. Make sure the throttle plate can open and close properly as well when you are finished. If you suspect the exhaust, try going underneath and giving the catalytc converter a little knock (while its cold!). If you can hear stuff rattling around, then it may be time for a new one. The vacuum elbows on the valve cover should also be cleaned, and check for oil in your air filter.

Good luck

Ok guys, after following cfkingfish's advice to check my cat I noticed clunking sound when I tapped it. Took it to an exhaust place and they confirmed that my cat was bad AND that my exhaust manifold was working on cracking.

1st - I got a buddy who says he has a cat that (for some reason I dont remember) was only on his vehicle for 3 months and would give to me if he can find it. Now as long as it has 2 1/4 tubing will it be ok to use on my Jeep?

2nd - About the cracked exhaust, I looked under the hood and on the top side of the pipe, right before the 2 pipes become 1, is a pretty obvious crack. Now they said they would weld it for $175, thats sounds like a lot since I could get some cheap headers for less than that. Would it be worth it to have it welded while I save up for new headers or just live with it until I can afford new headers.

I guess I have a 3rd

3rd - can I go ahead and replace the cat until I decide about #2 without causing any problems

Thanks for the info so far guys!
