Intermittent bogging and backfiring

Hi, folks. I posted this in the general engine and drivetrain forum, but was told it would be better to post it here. I've got a frustrating problem and I wonder if you have any ideas.

I have a '93 Cherokee 4.0, and I'm getting pretty frustrated with it. I don't have an insane amount of money to just throw parts at it. It runs great sometimes. Most of the time it doesn't. It backfires at higher RPMs just sitting still reving it. If I hold it steady at like 4500, it backfires. Once I'm driving, it bogs a lot. Then suddenly, it will run perfect. While I held it in neutral at around 3500 RPMs, it missed and popped, but all of a sudden revved up to about 6 grand. It bogs more than it runs perfect and doesn't backfire when I'm just driving along. Only when I rev it sitting still.

I've had this problem for about a year. It's bad enough that I barely drive it anymore. I'll try to remember all the things I've tried.

Intake air temp sensor
temp sensor
o2 sensor
Cleaned idle air control
checked for vacuum leaks
checked fuel pressure
The converter has been removed and it has a Flowmaster. It ran fine with that setup for a few years, but I thought I'd mention it.

I don't get any codes other than 12 and 55.

I've searched and searched, but I haven't found anything that sounds similar. Can the crank sensor do that? Could the TPS cause it? Wouldn't it throw a code if it was bad? Many thanks for any help.
