I'm thinking (thinking) about putting an intake on my Jeep. Is this a good investment? (Meaning will I get a noticeable power/sound increase?) If so, what intake do you recommend? I was thinking about a K&N. Thanks in advance.

Every vehicle I own or have owned for the last 10 years has had a K&N of some kind on it. It will give you better throttle responce and gas milage on highway driving.
As for what brand, that depends on where you plan to 4wheel. I like the K&N FIPK kit because of the low shielding and heat shielding. If you don't plan on a lot of water crossings or wet mud then any setup will do. The open alement styles from Rusty's, Turbo City , and others make me a little nervous around water.
You can alway fab yourself a lower shield and get whatever you want. Check out the manufactures websites that I mentioned and take a look at thier setups.

balloo, or anybody, you have any pics of a FIPK? I have a tustys air tube, and the whole water thing is making me nervous too. I'm wondering if fabbing sheilding would be worth my time, or if it would just be easier to get a FIPK? Pretty much only mud and water around here...

i think the fipk only surrounds just the filter, not the under side....

hjeepxj is right, the FIPK only protects the filter itsef, and for the price tag, I'd do some fabing. I'd start with some cheap sheets of tin to work out the shape. Then try aluminum as your final shield material. I'll try to find some links for it in a bit.
On second thought, here's a link to rocky road, half way down the page shows a XJ installed:

I just installed a K&N FIPK on my 2000 Cherokee and the additional power is quite noticable. You can hear the air rushing in, but it is not too noisy. I live in Vancouver, BC and we just went through a heavy rainy period and I had no problems with the water. K&N's are a bit expensive, but I had no problem with the installation and the performance.

its not the rain you have to worry about, its 4wheeling through deep water that scares most people.......

Hey, does yours have that prefilter bag like the one on that link does? What do you think of that?

I looked everywhere on the link for the prefilter bag that you mentioned and I can't find it. Mine looks just like the picture on this site http://www.rocky-road.com/xjk&n.html

I use an old Desert Storm trick! a woman's nylon knee high stocking,or you can use one leg from a pair of pantyhose
don't laugh it works and it's cheap.

On the K&N...the heat shield surrounding the filter...is that a rubber gaskit that meets against the hood, to help make a bettr seal? I couldn't really tell from the pics I've seen.
Since I don't plan on blasting through water that high....Definately not high enough to cover the side wallon the tires at least), I miagine adding an intake would be be a good investment?

Yes, it is a rubber gasket that goes along the edge of the shield. I'm not sure if it seals tight against the hood though.

on regular street driving (for example, to create a situation where you know how deep the water is), what is the deepest puddle you can drive through without having to worry about getting water in an open element filter?
