i have been searching my Butt off and cannot find the year / model that the swing away comes from. I like Bubba's bumper mount as opposed to the body AND bumper mount. Could someone (Bubba) plz tell me EXACTLY what to look for in the boneyard.
As you can tell I'm new to this Jeep'n stuff and hate to re-invent the wheel. Just got a 2000 XJ Sport... putting a 4.5" RC lift, BFG 31x10.50-15's and would LOVE the swing away spare.
Thanx for the help. Great info here - hope to be able to contribute as I 'mature'
Thanks Bubba, she doesn't get as much driving time now that I have a TJ too, but the XJ is still my first Jeeplove.
Jumbo, I don't know specifically what model it was for, definitely pre '97 though since it didn't mount right to the bumper with mods. I have seen two on other XJs in my are driving down the road and if I had to guess they were both early to mid 90's models.
2000 4-dr Sport XJ- RED 3" lift, moabs and 31" MTs
'97 TJ Sport- BLACK-2" lift and 32"s
Jumbo, just be sure to get ALL the brackets. Just recently I found out that there is a bumper support bracket with the carrier. The guys from the JY didn't include it when they shipped it too me (found w/ car-part.com). It's been well over a year and don't think I can contact them to search for one. I may have to fab something up now b/c I'm tired of the sagging when I open the carrier.
Thanx for the replys! - I did more looking and it seems that the carrier is from a '94 -> '96. REAL hard to find in local bone yard - mine anyway! But I'll keep looking.
Forums are great! How' bout it!!
I got mine off a 91 from some guy in napa, ca for 100 bucks. All brackets and nuts and bolts. It didn't bolt on per say but some modification is required. But I took it off the donor so I was sure to pay close attention to how it mounted up. But the carrier itself is very sturdy. I mounted a 33 and sat on top of the tire and it didn't even creak. I'm 230 lbs. by the way. I'm sure with very little modification you could mount a much larger tire on it. If all the bracketry is used.
I can't seem to find the link at the moment but I remember reading something warning about tire size and weight with the stock tire carrier. The bumper connection should be taking most of the weight but there was a picture of an XJ with stress cracks on the tailgate where the tire carrier locked in. If I remember correctly the tire was very large (35) and the XJ was wheeled hard. There was talk that the stock tire carrier was never designed to carry such a large or heavy tire.
