I'm going to swap a '96 longblock into a '91,....

Are there any pitfalls and or things I need to make sure to swap and or change?

The '91 motor runs great but it has a bad rear main seal leak and a small knock at start up and it smokes under stress. I figure its tired.

The '96 is dry and runs beautifully, plus it seems to have more power than My other XJs.

Any advice would be appreciated guys. :-)

blocks should be the same, just swap over accessories /motor mounts from one block to the other

My 96 XJ seemed peppier than my 99. Both had about 35K miles when I got them.

Were the 96 4L engines more powerful than other years?

I'm concerned with sensors, injectors and such, I know they are a physical match, its the small things that getcha LOL.

I read somewhere that there was some revisions done in '96.

Just swap it as a long block and you'll be fine.

If you own a Renix Jeep, you'll want to check this out.

Nope. 91-01 are all high-output 4.0s. I there were changes that may have bumped hp and/or torque be a couple points one way or another, but nothing big enough that you'd really feel it. I don't think anything changed from 96 to 98. Lots of things could have made one feel peppier. Maybe one had more drag due to bad brakes or bearing or aerodynamics. Maybe one was heavier. Maybe one had more wear/failing parts that you weren't aware of. Maybe all of the above. Maybe it was just your imagination. Maybe it was your instincts telling you the truth--that 96 XJ are the bomb diggity

LOL, bomb diggity, too funny.

I heard they are kind of a mix between years. No?
