Was I born Stupid?

So im sitting around the other day and was thinkin how I dislike my stock speakers. So I start rooting through my closet and find my Crystal mobilsound 6.5's. I bought theses and used them for a year then removed them casue i was getting rid of my car. They sounded awesome in my old car and were working when took them out. So I go ot my jeep pull the door panel off and remove the stock speaker and see its only a 5 1/4. So i get my air powered sawzall and trace it out and cut it so a 6.5 fits. I hook it up and turn the radio on and what the hell. The 6.5 sounds like ****. Not so much a blown sound but the bass is really bad. Id love to know how speakers blow from sitting in the closet. So now do i go buy another pair or do i just put the stockers back in. Luckily theyll still mount up. Why didnt i check before i started bustin my arse and cutting.

it probably isn't the speakers, unless the cone got wet or the driver element somehow corroded. Check your wiring to and from the head unit and see if you don't have any shorts. Also, check your fade and balance settings.

Might want to look into some sound deadening. The jeep door is pretty hollow. I put a 10"x10" sheet of dynamat behind my 6.5's when I installed them and they sound pretty good.

Could be a lot of things.. head unit not pushing the same amount your other car used to.. Air space ( The hole was 5 1/4 for a reason ) .. You can use normal stuffing to help out the sound.. Just how the speakers face can change the sound.. Make sure the door panel is tight and not rattling.. Might try buying a small amp to help push the speakers.. Any clue on what they can handle?

Peak? RMS?

I'm going with power output as being the issue. I have some Polk 6 1/2" serperates in my door and they push a lot of air with that much enclosure. I'm running them off of a JVC deck that is advertised as 45wx4 that I've bridged into 2 channels.

i second dynamat Also adding an amp will greatly increase sound quality and volume...i can still remember when i found out i could hook an amp to my door speakers...good times

sounds like you may have switched the (+) & (-)... If one speaker is hooked up correctyl and the other is switched you will undoubtedly get crappy sound.

I tested it with the speaker out and with the speaker mounted. Also I changed the setting on the pioneer and when I changed the balance from the left stock to the right Crystal it was clear that there was a problem. The stocker slammed and the crystal sounded like crap. The highs are fine but the bass is sooo bad. The cone is moving but theres no bass at all. I hooked the speaker up to my recieverr in my house. Same problem. Ive heard many blown speakers and this doesnt sound blown at all. There no rattle or anything of the sort. When i Had these hooked up previously there were powered by an amp. I also swapped the +,-. That did nothing. I then hooked up another crappy 6x9 that i had laying around. It sounded normal.

Could it be that these speakers need to be in some sort of an enclosure. I never tried putting the door panel back on. Its not like it would even be remotely air tight so would that make a difference? The 6x9 sounded normal just sitting on the seat.

how did that work out? are you getting the theoretical 90w out of each channel, and how do they sound. everything i've read says not to do so since it's already bridged internally but i love ghetto-modding...plus i need a good reason to replace my headunit....

Its a high end JVC unit. I'm probably getting about 50w per channel when compared to a real amplifier. They sound really nice, but I wish I had the space for a real amp and a sub. They're an old set of Polk DX2 Euro 6s. The cone on them measures something like 6 5/8" from surround to surround.

I dont know the terms involved in audio/speaker talk... but I do know how to connect stuff, and one thing i noticed about any speaker, is that if you have it hooked up to an amp for a while it wont work the same with lower power... usually the woofer goes out and not your tweeter/mid('s)... i think the voice coil builds a memory of how to run and when its being pushed with an amp such things will happen
