HP30 w/ 4.10s?

Just got done reading the FAQ and found this surprising. Maybe even something that I could use to my advantage. Did DC ever put 4.10s in an HP30? That would save me quite a bit of trouble and $$...

Quote:
Front Axles

Dana 30 high pinion - reverse cut - 27 spline, 1.16" diameter shafts, 7.13" ring gear - used 84-99 (some axles through 91 are vacuum disconnect, 92+ are non-disconnect, 89-95 with ABS have 5-297x u-joints, all 95+ have 5-297x u-joints, all others have 5-260x u-joints)

Gearing

3.07 - used with 4.0L engine / manual transmission
3.31 - only available on older (pre87?) 2 door XJs with "Fuel Economy" package
3.55 - used with 4.0L engine / automatic transmission
3.73 - found in some XJs with the towing package
4.10 - used with 2.5L engine usually, and older XJs with the "Off-Highway Vehicle" package.
4.56 - rare but can be found on some older (~ 89 ~) models with 2.5L engine and auto transmission

Well, if it was 4wd and the rear had 4.10s, then the front must have had them.

I don't know why it would be in the FAQ, if they never put them in there...

Trick is...can you find one?

All the time and effort spent to find one, it might be worth it to just buy the gears.

Youre answer is pretty much in your post... D30 HP used from 84-99, and then it states that 4.10s were put in XJs with the 2.5L.

I'm hoping so. I suppose I could start my search through the local junk yards this weekend. For some reason they seem to have quite a few XJs

That's what I was thinking too... I would hate to spend all this time looking for one, only to never actually get one. I don't really NEED an HP30, I just want one. And if it were to have 4.10s, again...

If you can find one in your area yes, they'll be the less desireable vacuum disconnect axle most likely though.. I saw like 2 in the junkyard this weekend here in Albuquerque NM.

Ah... can you explain a bit about the vacuum disconnect thing to me? I never quite understood it, and honestly never had a reason to try. Now I'm curious.

2 piece axles. driveshaft will not spin when in 2 wheel drive as opposed to a non disco one which will always be spinning. vacuum can fail thus leaving u without 4x4 i suppose. theyre undesirable as mentioned above. basically its a system which connects and disconnects axle shafts together to provide power

also the older crappier smaller ujoints (260s)

of course these can always be converted to one piece shafts

So they're just crappy inner shafts? If that's all then no problem. I'm going chromo anyway.

Basically, they're like lockout hubs, but really really really crappy?

Greg, thanks for the links. Makes sense.

So my next question, what years should I look for in the junk yards? What are the differences between the years? Thanks.

But as the specs state, if its an older axle it may have the off chance of being 4.56 so just verify the ratio before you pull it to make sure. I'd look for a newer year (92 - 99) to avoid the vacuum disconnect. Good chance that anything with the 2.5L has 4.10's.

4.56's only came in the 2.5L with the AW4. Most of the ones I have seen & heard about were 89's. JIM.
