How tell what gearing i have?

I'm going to buy a 8.25 and was just wondering what gear ratio I currently have. I have a 88 2 door limited. Ive read that it came with either 3.55 or 3.73. Besides counting the teeth on the ring could I call the vin into the DMV and find out that way? The metal tab on my pumpkins is long gone from the po. Thanks for any advice.

Or you can go to a jeep dealership and get it there, they just need your vin number. I did that for mine

Block the front tires, put the transmission in Neutral and jack up the rear.

For open Differentials, jack up one tire, spin wheel 2X, and count pinion/driveshaft rotations.

If locked or Limited Slip, jack up both tires, spin wheels 1X (both wheels will spin together) and count pinion/driveshaft rotations.

About 3 and one half rotations equals 3.55 gears.

Look at the tag on either of the diffs. Post up the numbers.

FWIW, can't seem to get build sheets on anything older than 89.

And, an 88 Limited with auto trans will have 3.55 gears stock.

If you own a Renix Jeep, you'll want to check this out.
