Get underneath the jeep and grab the tie rod and try to move it around. It should pivot tightly. Any excessive play, or movement means its shot. Most of the time it will make a small clank when you move it, which is due to the excessive play between the ball shank and socket poprtion. Other way is to have someone tug on the wheel and you watch and listen underneath to see if its shot.. your choice.

With 145k miles, replace all of them. You can be sure that they are worn.

Would a shot tie-rod/ tie-rod end make a clunking noise while turning occasionally?

I just got my front u-joint done a few months ago. So, I don't think that's it.

I was wondering this as well. My tierod is nice and tight, and it's greased up, (sorry that sounded wrong) I can't move it side to side, but I can kick either side of my tire and it'll move about a half of an inch left or right like it's turning. Is this bad?
