How to: Replace axle seal - front

Folks, I have a '95 Cherokee Sport. I seem to have developed a leak in the front right axle. I've pulled axles on rear diffs before, but never on the front end of my Jeep. The type I've worked on in the past are of the c-clip variety. Wondering how tough a job this will be to replace the seal, and while I'm in there, what else would be a good idea to replace?

Any how-to links on this?

All help appreciated.

Thx,

Don

shmokin: Thanks for the info, didn't realize those were so inward towards the pumpkin. Is there another set of bearings/seals more outward towards the u-joints also?

nope, thats what I'm ordering as we speak, oem theres only a little plastic plate there, I'm getting aftermarket ones to keep water out.

dana 3o axle seal

this is so frustrating my axle started leaking today drivers side, so I come here to read about job difficulty and other info. so I figured ok got the knowledge and need the parts. well getting the parts is the issue. I went to auto zone, napa, norwoods, advance auto parts... all said they do not have the parts or can't find the parts number.

so I am thinking why is it hard to find a axle seal for a dana 30 axle, these axles are not only found in jeeps... so if some one can give me a part number for a auto parts store located in new jersey it would be greatly appreciated.

-Ryan

I know I could just order the seal from a online parts store but i want to get the job done over the weekend, I don't want to spend a small fortune on gear oil just to have to leak out while I wait for the parts to arrive

You may be able to get those from the dealer, otherwise you will likely have to order them.

Just did mine today while changing from 3.07 to 3.55 gears, the seals were an extreme pain getting started in the axle tube, definitely takes two people.
