How to remove window regulator (manual window)

I think my window regulator is kaputt, as I can roll the window down, and when I go to roll it up, it just cranks around and a round making terrible grinding noises. I took the panel off last night, and I was trying to figure out how to take the regulator out, and coulden't get it. Does the glass have to come out before the regulator will? and what holds it on at the top of the regulator. There's two bolts that you unscrew to remove the regulator from the door, but it's held on at the top somehow. any help would be appreciated. thanks

It may be riveted. You might have to drill it out. I don't think the glass needs to come out. I think they come out as a unit. Check in a Chiltons or Haynes for sure.

Power or manual dosen't matter. They are both called regulators.

Hey nick last time i had my door ripped open i took a look at the regulator and you have to drill out the 2 or 3 rivits to get it out. from the looks of it, it will be a PITA

I think it's more like 8 rivits, no biggy. Took me about an hour and a half to pull my old one out and put my 'new' one in, then bolt all the crap back together. Actually, it would have been like 15-20 minutes, but uh, the little clips on the cables for the lock/door handle blew up on me...

Oh yeah, just unbolt the glass, it can stay where it is. And there's supposed to be a seal thing between the door skin that you'll have to trash, I opted not to bother putting it back on, seeing as how the main issue with my jeep regarding the door skin getting wet/dirty is because my windshield leaks like mother.
