How Much Backspacing Is Too Much?

I'm looking for new wheels for my XJ. Stock backspacing is 5.25" correct? Is 4.0" backspacing too much? Am I going to have bering problems?

My YJ has 33's mounted on 15X10's with 3.5" of backspace. Dana 30 & Dana 35 axles, and it's been that way for years with no issues.

And my wife's too, same size wheels/tires/backspace. That's not my wife driving BTW, it's our daughter, NOT driving!

4" backspacing is the recommended size. And 5.25" is stock on the XJ. With the 4" you can run up to 12.50's with no rubbing issues, that is on the lower arms.

I'm learning how everybody thinks around here........more than 1 person has commented on my "wife" being "awful young" when I've posted that pic of the wife's YJ.

Haha. I was thinking the same thing when you posted that pic.

My wife hates my Jeep....but that's just too bad. It's a part of the family!

Still have rubbing anywhere else? Any flare trimming?

4" will be fine. So you'll be running a 3.5" lift and 30's? Have you trimmed the fenders at all? With my setup, the tires rubbed pretty good on the rear part of the front fender when turning, so I've trimmed quite a bit.

Here is how far mine stick out, but my tires are 11.5" wide.

I only have 30x9.5s right now. I'll go as big as I can after another 10k miles....

No rubbing, so no trimming yet.

I have the side biters on order (they are about 3.75" BS) ans will have 12.5" wide Baja Claws on them. I will post picks let you know how they work when I get the tires mounted and installed. The Rims are on back order.

I have Bushwhackers so I have done some extensive trimming already, but have stock control arms still so we will see if they rub at full lock and if they fit in with the flairs.
