How To Install A TC Drop *Write Up*
Alright well i installed my TC Drop (as a temp fix) as of yesterday, and i really didnt have a lot of ideas of exactly how to do it. Then i searched JF and i was suprized to see that there wasnt one here either, so heck i decided that i would wing it and snap some pics.
*Please Note* A TC Drop is deemed only a temporary fix for correcting vibrations and the angle of the driveshaft. It is highly recommended to go with a SYE/Hack N Tap to eliminate the problem. Step 1 Get a jack and rest it up against the cross member suporting the Transfer Case, once it is rested then start unbolting the bolts. *Note* Will require a breaker bar ![]() Step 2 Lower the jack 2-3 inches in order for you to get enough space between the unibody and the crossmember to put your spacer in. ![]() Step 3 Remove the stud . To do this you will need to put two nuts back to back on the stud. Make sure that the bottom nut is very tight against the top nut to avoid stripping the stud as i did. Once tight then put a wrench on the top nut and start unscrewing the stud. This picture is a little bad but it kindof gets the point across. ![]() Step 4 Align up the new bolts and the spacers (this might requre a little force) then raise up the jack and screw in the bolts. Make sure they are tight and you have a TC drop. ![]() Thank You For Your Time, And As Always Post Comments Or Suggestions If You Feel Something Needs Correcting -Kyle

![]() but about the quote, you still want to be turning loose the top "nut" not the top "bolt".

and if the double nut doesn't work use a pipe wrench and a hammer...thats what we did on my bros 97...the double nuts stripped the threads so we just took a pipe wrench and hammered it on and it turned right out.
Oh and if you dont wanna buy one you can make one for a few bucks at ACE...just get some 1" square tubing and longer bolts and you are ready to go.

Now- what happens when the studs break off at the threads in the steel. Then what?

Cut a small hole in the frame and weld another nut in place, or a stud.. That's why the square tubing is the way to go. You can leave the stud in.. ![]() Quote:
If you use the jack on the transfer case, and remove the 4 bolts on the cross member that attach to the t-case, you won't have to fight to get the holes to line up. Simply tighten up the cross member to the frame after you install the drop, then tight the t-case.

that tubing idea seems like the best option for a long term TC drop, im just going to have myne on for a short period of time.
and thanks for the easy way to lign up the cross member, we had a bit of trouble with it. -kyle

The tubing just makes for an easier install. I've read too many stories about the welded nut breaking off inside the frame. The first time I did a t-case drop, I had to use a scissors jack to get the cross member to line back up. It was a big pain.. Taking of the t-case mount bolts just makes it easier.. ![]()

Nice write up. The only thing I would add would be to have two nuts for each stud.
I had to really tighten the double nuts and the threads were too distorted to be used again. Here's a picture of the trans drop mount I made/used on my '01 XJ. I added the dimensions to the pic. ![]() Feel free to copy and include the picture in your post if you want. If you want to add the dimensions differently, here's link to the original picture. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/JRD77VET/Cherokee%20Sport/transfercasedropspacer.jpg Jeff |
