my cables are somewhat coroded so how hard is it to replace the battery cables on a 98 XJ sport? I figure the ground is a peice of cake but how do I replace the positive cable? It looks like it is bound with a bunch of other wires and I don't know where it goes from the battery
Go to your local parts store, buy appropriate lengths of 2 guage wire and some HD terminals. Attach terminals, install and go! Cheap and easy to do, and you can afford to make two pair for less than it costs to buy pre-made ones.
I just replaced all of the battery mains over Thanksgiving weekend.
It is not that hard, but you will need a cutter to remove the insulation covering the existing cables. Below is a link for the best set-up I have ever seen...it is complete and it is affordable. The only item I needed to supply was a small 1/4" ring with a "blue" sleeve to reattach the start relay lead to the start motor solenoid. It's easier than it sounds...trust me.
I noticed a gain in everything electrical related on the vehicle. The headlights were brighter, interior lights brighter, even the radio lit up more and the presets went much faster. It also starts much quicker now that I replaced the battery and alternator at the same time.
The cable part is easy. Just be sure not to cut any smaller wires within the conduit. Also, if your Jeep is not lifted, you will want to lift the front end to better access the starter and its cable holder attached to the block. My '98 Jeep is UpCountry equipped so I could barely squeeze underneath to do the job.
If you go with the below link which I recommend, make sure you have a combo wire cutter/stripper to reattach the smaller wire to the starter. If you need further info, please ask! I think that it is well worth it to know what you are getting into before you start.

I'd go that route, or stop by your local welding supply store, and buy some 0/1 AWG to redo it with.
