how far does a slip joint travel
So, after my last post about my front ds (5 speed) not being long enough to use for the rear with a h&t setup, i got one off an automatic. it is long enough, but the slip joint is almost fully extended. my question is how much does it actually move when your driving, on or off road. will it pull out?

Oh, do you mean like THIS!?!?!?
![]() ![]() ![]() .........I must have asked this same question 5 times on this forum. I didnt get any kind of real answer, so I went ahead and did it according to R.E. instructions. I discovered 3 important things: 1) Not too many XJ owners have 5 speeds. 2) I probably could have gotten away with doing this without cutting the shaft, just tapping it and installing the setup. 3) It will be fine, but the slider will DEFINITELY appear too short. .....Ive hyad mine in all kinds of situations, and it hasnt pulled out yet. A good driveshaft shop can install a longer slider, which I might do soon for piece of mind. good luck |

You shouldn't have any troubles with it pulling out. I believe they have some sort of retention clip on the end of the shaft to keep it from pulling all the way out.
I just bought a front shaft off a ZJ for my front after my lift and it's about an inch longer than the XJ front shaft that I'm now using on the rear. |
