Are you talking about the marks on the plate behind the pinion gear?

CJ7-Tim 05-08-2013 11:05 AM

Original stock gears, or replacement gears ?

TheBoogieman 05-08-2013 11:39 AM

I'm getting old.The pics weren't big enough.

You're gonna need to provide a little more info.
Was there any schrapnel or excessive grit in the diff? Was the pinion excessively loose? Was it like that when you installed it?
Look for a large chunk of something in the nooks and crannys of the diff.
Judging by the large pic (kudos for actually putting it in focus) it looks like something contacted the plate over-and-over, possibly the pinion.
But were gonna need more info to diagnose.

90 xj stock Dana 30, as far as i know stock gears. Bought it for 900 in Feb. with a 4 in lift and 31's. No grit, fluid looked pretty new though. 241 t case with slack in the chain, shaft turns more than it should when you trust it by hand. I've been having this gnarly shake and growl at low speeds, worse when braking to a stop. Opened her up cleaned her real good, even took the front shady out and it might gave helped but not a noticeable difference. Anything else you need?

Would bad shaft seals cause this? Might have to take a video..

Probably a sloppy pinion bearing. Any play in the axle yoke ?

MuddSnapper 05-09-2013 05:03 PM

Only slightly front to back. Maybe a few thousandths? It is wet around the yoke like it was leaking at one point but my driveway only does spits of brake fluid from a leaking abs hose..

There should NEVER be any axial play in the pinion when installed correctly.

OK. I didnt install a new one yet but I will keep that in mind. On the pass side I think my u joint is shot. The shaft slides in and out a decent amount. Could that be from the C clip breaking or the U joint

98muddyjeep 05-11-2013 09:23 AM

The front axles dont use c clips to hold them in,the unit bearings at the wheel hold the front axles in and no it wouldnt cause that,I have seen some awful bad u joints in my time with no internal damage.

CJ7-Tim 05-11-2013 09:27 AM

Somebody with experience needs to see inside the diff and feel for any pinion play. You need to take you Jeep to a trusted and skilled mechanic for a proper diagnostic inspection of the differential.
