How do you weld under your jeep?

What do you wear and/or what is your setup for welding under your jeep that is safest and easiest?

I wear full leathers and gauntles gloves as well as a shirt sleeve over my head under the helmet. At least now I do, I have caught multiple hooded sweatshirts on fire and have scars on my arms and legs(real close to the jewels) from welding under my XJ, nothing worse, that unibody glue and thin sheetmetal is a pita to weld! I bought a carhart fire resistant jumpsuit just because of the close calls, but it didn't really stop the slag from completely melting through, just cooled it down a bit.

I suggest a fire extinguisher and a wet towel real close by, as well as somebody to let you know you are on fire..and hopefully help you put it out

I guess it really depends on how much welding and where at. I welded just about EVERY single seam on my XJ, top and bottom.......never again, next project will have a frame

good luck!

i got some big cardboard slip sheets from work and put that over me while wearing an old jacket. works pretty good at keeping the slag off of you and the cardboard never caught fire. just keep an eye on it and when it starts getting a lot of burn holes throw it out. i am sure a welding blanket from harbor freight would work well also.

i try not to wear to much clothes because a hot piece of slag stuck in between your sleeve and your skin is a lot worse than one that hits your skin and bounces off. keep that in mind before you get all bundled up.

it was about $130:
Carhartt - Product - Flame-Resistant Duck Bib Overall/Unlined

Like I said, just alot of the unibody seams are what tend to flare up and cause grief/injury. I did way more than the normal/sane person would do of those, for the most part it is not too bad if you clean it really well and don't hit a glue spot. What are you planning on welding up?

****, i usually ear a pair of jeans and a t shirt. sometimes a sweatshirt. and welding gloves and helmet of course. but it really helps if you just sit a little to the side. and have the welder set right with clean steel to weld, both help keep the spatter/fall-off down.

That is pretty much how I do it too. I did get a large piece of slag down my slip on shoes once and it just about went through my foot before I got it out.

I would not be doing anything underneath that truck in the link above. I say weld it up naked. I would make it interesting
