How do I tell if my differential is limited slip?

I am in the process of getting a fullsize spare for my 1998 XJ Sport with Command Trac (right now, I just have the donut-spare).

Currently, it has 16" rims on it from a 2000 XJ, which are expensive to buy. I can get a 15" steel wheel for cheap, but I don't want to toast my differential if it is limited slip with the different tire sizes.

So, how do I tell if I have a limited slip differential or not?

Thanks!

In a safe and wide open area, do a burn out on grass, dirt/sand, or snow. A Limited Slip will leave two tire stripes, an open differential will leave just one.

Or, open the diff and look inside.

As long as all 4 tires are the same size, it doesn't matter to the Limited Slip what the tire size is.

Open on the left and Limited Slip on the right -

There should be a tag under one of the diff bolts at says to use a friction modifier (or LSD additive).

Here's my D35...

I laughed so hard, coffee came out my nose. In the real world where rust lives and breathes, those tags are long gone.

A few things, first off, your talking wheel size not tire size.

Secondly, your just talking about the spare tire.. More than likely the spare wouldn't even be used, so its size matching the others is not as important (hence the donut spare), A fullsize spare in the jeep world is usually because if you have a flat on the trail you want to beable to drive out, where a donut would struggle being its so small. So any close tire size would be fine, so long as you don't use it full time on the street. I view my spare as a way to get home or to a shop, not as another tire to use (and i have a full spare).

Thirdly, if you had an LSD out back I would bet money that it came with a full size spare. If it had LSD but no full size spare, then they must not have been worried about tire size differences when using the donut spare, so I wouldn't be either.

And more helpful probably.. If the 16" wheels on your jeep (from a limited) have the factory size tires on them, and the 15" wheel your looking at was from a cherokee (or wrangler I think) and it has the factory size tire on it then I would bet the tires are the same OD.

The factory size was 225/75/15, or for a limited I think 225/70/16. Those are for all intensive purposes the same size tire, just a different wheel diamiter.

As for how do I I find out about LSD. You can look for the tag on a bolt, you can look in the glovebox for a sticker, you can email jeep for your build sheet, or you can open the diff and look.
Burnout tests can be inconclusive as it is possible to have a 2 wheel burnout with out LSD and a 1 wheel burnout with it. You can also jack up the back of the jeep and turn one tire, if the other turns the same direction, LSD (you need to be in neutral for this test).

Good Luck!
