if you do anything to the clear coat, its going to take the paint with it.

You could always sand and rattle can it, but you might be better off going ahead and getting it repainted well. Its a bit of change, but it'll look much better in the end.

There's nothing that will just take the clear coat off. If most of the problem areas are on the top, you could spot in the roof and top of hood. Otherwise you'll have to paint the whole thing. You don't need to take it down to bare metal to paint it, just scuff the surface.

Join me for a trail ride. Branches, bushes, logs etc. removed my clearcoat, along with paint, years ago.j/k
The only shiney thing on my junk is the hood.

I don't really know, but I assume a laquer thinner might do the job.

Just sand the whole damn thing. If you don't have $ for nice paint, rattle can jobs are very durable, and depending on how well you prep can turn out very nice. However, I would only suggest a flat color. but like someone else mentioned, you don't need to get it down to the bare metal. Just scuff it up with some wet fine grit on a sanding block.

1988/89 clearcoat was an industry-wide problem...not just with Jeeps....the clearcoat fades, cracks then peels....I took care of mine by hitting it repeatedly with my powerwasher. It took about six months to get all of it off, and I had to use a plastic scraper to get it off of some of the harder to reach spots. Take your time, it'll come off. Obviously some people haven't encountered what you're talking about.

I was a manager at a body shop, and this came up few times. We would sand down all edges by hand, and then sand flat surface with a DA sander.
If we happen to go thru the paint, no big deal, just repaint those spots.
Then reclear the whole thing.

you can try light coats of paint thiner (laquer... not remover)

you can also try a strong degreaser like greased lightning.. that might take it off.

anything you try might take the paint off too though :-/

I used an anglegrinder with a wirewheel, then some heavy primer and flat rattle cans.

Took about 2hrs total to grind the thing down to bare metal that way or so, another 2hrs or so to paint it.
